ARMENIA’S EDUCATION AND SCIENCE MINISTRY TO INCREASE THE NUMBER OF STUDENTS ELIGIBLE TO FREE EDUCATION
YEREVAN, August 20. / ARKA /. Armenia’s education and science minister
Armen Ashotyan told reporters today his ministry was considering ways
to increase the number of students at state-owned universities majoring
in some priority specialties, who will be eligible to free education.
He said the number of such students is likely to increase from
September 1, 2014 by 10-20% (400 to 800 students).
He said there are around 70 public and private universities in the
country. He said during his tenure (he was appointed minister in May
2009), some 50 private universities were shut down for failure to
meet the set requirements. This year some 2,400 students in state-run
universities will have free education while another 19,000 will have
to pay for it. -0-.
