78.5% of Armenians want to leave the country, as stated by Garik
Ayrapetyan, director of the Armenian Office of the UN Population Fund.
48% of people questioned said that it was easier to find a job abroad,
42% expect higher wages abroad, 12% said that human rights were better
protected abroad.. 8% want to leave due to poor law enforcement, 4.5%
due to bad psychological atmosphere, 3% due to political situation.
Alexander Iskandaryan, director of the Caucasus Institute, said that
young people were the main cause of migration in all states. They
are people aged 18-40.
The positive migration balance of 2001-2002 was caused by economic
progress, construction financed mainly by Russia and the US and
high price of Armenian products. The crisis hit Armenia in 2007-2008
and 2009. The situation can be improved by opening new workplaces,
Iskandaryan believes.
