ASSOCIATION AGREEMENT MUST BE PRECEDED BY NATIONWIDE REFERENDUM – MARXIST

August 13, 2013 | 14:16

YEREVAN. – Armenian authorities must first of all present the test
of Association Agreement with EU to the public and hold a nationwide
referendum on the issue, head of Marxist party said.

Davit Hakobyan, leader of Armenian Marxist party, is confident that
the Agreement must be signed only after holding a referendum.

“The nationwide referendum will show which part of the society stands
for the EU and which for the USSR,” Hakobyan said during the Tuesday
press conference.

The Association Agreement contains no point on either settlement of
the Karabakh conflict, or ensuring Armenia’s security.

“The Agreement is called to develop trade, but the European market
is not waiting for Armenia. As to the Eurasian Union, the matter
is creation of a new geopolitical center,” he said, noting that
the Eurasian Union must create a balance in the context of current
pan-American hegemony.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
