Armenia’s Agriculture Minister Sergo Karapetian received today the
UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Representative in Armenia
Antonio Alonzi, according to the ministry’s press service.

The minister spoke about the efficiency of six FAO agricultural
programs being implemented in Armenia. He expressed hope that the
project of upgrading the slaughterhouses delayed for technical reasons
will be included in the program next year.

Sergo Karapetian discussed the FAO-sponsored program on preservation of
apricot’s genetic resources. He proposed examining the opportunities of
launching a project for using and preserving grapes’ genetic resources
as well.

Mr. Alonzi thanked the minister for his reception and assured him
that he is ready to assist as far as possible with FAO programs’
implementation in Armenia. In his words, he had the opportunity to
visit the orchard created with their assistance and plant an apricot
tree there.

Sergo Karapetian informed the FAO representative about the idea to
found a museum of apricot, noting that the existence of such a museum
will be symbolic in Armenia, the home of apricots.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
