Opposition comments on political agenda, coalition in Erevan election
Opposition parties running in the municipal election in Armenia’s
capital city of Yerevan, have expressed their visions of the
implications of the election, commenting also on the possible
cooperation, the Armenian Public TV’s main news programme reported on
17 April.
MP Vardan Oskanyan of parliament’s second-largest Prosperous Armenia
Party’s top of the list said at a campaign meeting that changes in the
government of the capital city could bring about changes in the whole
of Armenia. “By taking power in the city, we can change a lot” he was
shown saying. “Yerevan is half of the country. Believe me, if someone
not from the party in power becomes Yerevan mayor, a lot will start
changing and very quickly too,” Oskanyan added.
Opposition Armenian National Congress’ top of the list, Vahagn
Khachatryan, also said at a news conference that the election to the
Yerevan Council was a political issue. “Our failures are not rooted in
the economy. They are political in nature,” Khachatryan was shown
saying.
Khachatryan also underlined the importance of an alliance with other
opposition factions. “Success in the election depends also on the
format of participation of all non-government parties and on our
mutual cooperation. I am sure we have a chance to win and that victory
could be attained together,” he said.
The Barev Yerevan (Hello Yerevan!) election coalition, composed mainly
of former presidential runner-up Raffi Hovhannisyan’s supporters,
continued its campaign in Yerevan neighbourhoods, the TV channel
reported. “As to the presence in the campaign of other opposition or
pseudo-opposition forces, this does not concern us at all and we
welcome any opposition force’s participation in the race, as they are
no competitors to us,” Armen Martirosyan topping the electoral list
said, commenting on other opposition parties.
Armen Martirosyan also did not rule out cooperation with Armenian
Revolutionary Federation (ARF) Dashnaktsutyun party, the TV said.
