Armen Martirosyan, the deputy chairman of opposition leader Raffi
Hovannisian’s Heritage party, has reportedly been brought to a
police department as a result of clashes between security forces and
protesters near the presidential headquarters earlier on Tuesday.

Heritage party spokesman Hovsep Khurshudyan told RFE/RL’s Armenian
Service that Martirosyan was taken to the police station at about
7.20 pm, while demonstrators were clashing with police in Baghramyan
Avenue. He said that Martirosyan’s face was in blood at that time.

Footage from the scene shows Martirosyan may have had his nose broken
in the scuffle.

Martirosyan also leads a bloc of parties, Barev Yerevan, in the
Armenian capital’s elections scheduled for next month. He also
survived a stabbing during post-election protests five years ago
when he reportedly protected a police worker from a group of violent
demonstrators.

Reports also say that Andrias Ghukasyan, who initiated a sit-in in
Baghramyan Avenue, has also been brought to a police department.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
