FALKLANDS VOTE TO REMAIN PART OF UK
2013-03-12 12:54:27
An overwhelming majority of residents of the Falkland Islands have
voted in favor of remaining a UK overseas territory in a referendum
that took place on March 10th and 11th.
The referendum was held amid the continuing conflict between Britain
and Argentina over Argentina’s claims to the islands.
98.8% of the voters cast their ballots in favor of remaining part of
the UK.
The voter turnout was about 92%.
The referendum is expected to put an end to territorial claims by
Argentina, which has been refusing to recognize the archipelago’s
current status since the 1982 Falkland War.
