Iran envoy says peacekeeper deployment in breakaway Karabakh not to be effective

Baku, 20 February: Mohsen Pak-A’in, Iranian ambassador in Baku said:
The deployment of a peacekeeping mission in the [Azerbaijan’s
breakaway Nagornyy] Karabakh region is not an effective way of
resolving the conflict. Moreover, this can cause new security problems
in the region.

In his interview with an IRNA reporter on Wednesday [20 February],
Pak-A’in said: Regional countries can propose a resolution for the
Karabakh issue. Extra-regional countries and organizations are not
motivated enough to resolve the Karabakh issue. Solutions proposed by
regional countries have often been constructive in similar conflicts.

Iran’s ambassador to Azerbaijan said: The deployment of peacekeepers
for the purpose of resolving the Karabakh conflict is unlikely. It
requires some conditions, which are not present now due to the
disagreement between the two sides [Armenia and Azerbaijan].

Pak-A’in said that the Islamic Republic of Iran was ready to help
resolve the Karabakh conflict and added: In case there are the
necessary requirements, we would like to help solve the problem.

He said: The strategy of maintaining ties with both sides to the
conflict provides Iran, which is the head of the Non-Aligned Movement,
with an appropriate potential to help stabilize peace and security in
the region.

The Iranian ambassador to the Republic of Azerbaijan said: It has been
years that major countries have been unable to resolve the problems of
Palestine, Afghanistan, and Iraq. In cases such as Syria, foreign
countries’ interference has caused innocent people to be killed.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
