IN 2012 CAR IMPORTS INTO ARMENIA GREW, WHILE PETROLEUM IMPORTS DROPPED

In 2012 car imports into Armenia grew by 23%, while petroleum imports
dropped by 3.3%.
The Customs Service of Armenia reports that 32,000 cars were imported
into the country in 2012 against 26,000 ones in 2011, with their
customs value being $219mln against $223mln in 2011. This implies
that the cars imported into the country in 2012 were cheaper.
The petroleum imports made up 357,861 tons against 346,403 tons in
2011, with the customs value being $362mln against $371.5mln in 2011.
The key reason for declining petroleum imports is that more and more
drivers are giving preference to cheaper gas. The local oil traders say
that almost half of cars in Armenia have already been converted to gas.
