Territorial Tensions Are Against Armenia’s Interests

TERRITORIAL TENSIONS ARE AGAINST ARMENIA’S INTERESTS

“Tension in our territory has risen and that is not favorable for
Armenia, unfortunately”, said the director of “Modus Vivendi” center
Ara Papyan.

First of all, he noted that anti-Armenian tendencies have apparently
increased in Turkey. Violence against Armenian women are an obvious
evidence for that.

Papyan noted that anti-Armenian mood will get stronger by 2015,
which will make a bunch of problems for us. Hence, he does not see
any reform in Armenian-tuskish Interstate and International Relations.

Ara Papyan turned to Iran saying that in 2014 there will be
presidential elections in Iran. If there were inter political
disobedience during the Parliamentary elections in that country
then the same is likely to happen during the presidential elections
as well. Ara Papyan noted that American pressure on Iran decreases,
which is good for us, but we also have to take the fact that tension
will increase their also into consideration.

Our next neighbor is Georgia, where dual power is ruling, making the
situation unstable and, as he noted, it is not possible to predict
what development will occur.

Developments in Azerbaijan are the most important for us. There are
serious developments there also, especially in Ismayil, where national
outbreak took place. Ara Paypan noted that this territory is mainly
populated by lezgis and social-economic development are national here.

On one hand this is good for us as authorities of Azerbaijan will be
busy handling their own problems, but on the other hand, it can be
dangerous as countries like Azerbaijan try to solve their national
problems by creating small, bloodless wars, which can have unwanted
and bloody result not only for us but for Azerbaijan as well.

However, according to Ara Papyan, there is one factor in
Armenian-Azerbaijani relations, which increases tension between both
countries, and that is Stepanakert airport. This issue is in stalemate
situation. Each side became responsible for the announcements they
have made and each is denying its announcement stating that it will
be disgraceful not just for their nation but for the International
relations.

Ara Papyan turned to the incident that had taken place with
presidential candidate Paruyr Hayrikyan and noted that it increases
tensions in inter political developments. He considers Hayrikyan’s
announcement that the attempted murder could be from russian special
services unacceptable and noted that the shooter must be searched
for in Armenia.
