A conference entitled “Cultural Diplomacy in the U.S.” was held
in Washington DC., from January 9 to 11. The event was devoted to
dialogue between civilizations, cultural diplomacy, and the prospects
of US foreign policy.

The representative of Armenia’s Embassy in the United States addressed
the conference, and reflected on Armenian culture, the Armenians’
contribution to dialogue between civilizations, development of world
culture, and promoting tolerance. Also, the representative spoke
about the Armenian diaspora’s contribution to expanding relations
between Armenia and abroad. The destruction of Armenian culture in
Turkey and in Azerbaijan was reflected on, as well.

And the American Armenian community representative, who likewise
attended the conference, spoke on the Armenian communities’ role
with respect to intercultural ties, and as a connecting link between
Armenia and those countries where Diaspora Armenian communities exist.

In addition, discussants examined the case of Ramil Safarov-the
Azerbaijani army officer who had killed with an axe Armenian soldier
Gurgen Margaryan in Budapest back in 2004 and who was released in
Azerbaijan last year-as a vivid example of encouraging xenophobia
in Azerbaijan.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
