Three weeks since the middle of August Armenia becomes the only fresh
grape supplier in the world, as grape does not ripe so early in any
country of the north hemisphere, chairman of the Armenian Wine Makers
Union, Avag Harutyunyan, told ArmInfo correspondent. He also added
that to use such a privilege, the government has decided to support
development of the table grapes, cultivation of which is more
beneficial than cultivation of the industrial grade of grape.

For this reason, over the next 10 years, at the plains and piedmont of
Aramavir and Aragatsots regions of Armenia, at the territory 5 thsd
hectares, the table grape will be cultivated, chiefly, sultana grape.
The state will subsidize purchasing of planting material, espalier and
hail suppression devices. The planting material for the first 100 ha
of the new vinelands has been already received.

He said that at present the territory of vinelands in Armenia is
16,5-17 thsd ha against 13 thsd ha in 2003. About 40 ths farmers have
been cultivating grape in the republic.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
