Baku, Fineko/abc.az. Azerbaijan supported holding of the chess
tournament with the Garabagh Armenians in the proposed FIDE format.

Today in Baku FIDE president Kirsan Ilyumzhinov has stated that
being faithful to its motto (“We are a family”) FIDE conducts global
campaigns “Chess without Borders” in conflict zones.

“3 weeks ago we organized a children’s chess tournament. Today we have
consent of the Palestinian and Israeli sides to hold the children’s
tournament on the 1,000 boards at the place where the parties are
building the separation wall. There are also talks about the children’s
tournament on 100 boards on the bridge that separates North and South
Korea, and the bridge between Moldova and Transdniestria. In the same
format, we propose to hold a chess tournament between Azerbaijani
and Armenian children. FIDE is out of politics, but is for the union
between chess players,” Ilyumzhinov said.

In response Youth & Sports Minister Azad Rahimov of Azerbaijan stated
that in this context, he and his Ministry are ready to support the
chess tournament.

“We consider the Nagorno Garabagh area one of the areas of Azerbaijan,
and are ready to implement the idea of FIDE chess tournament between
the Azerbaijani and Armenian children in Nagorno Garabagh,” Rahimov
said.

Earlier Azerbaijan had a mixed reaction to the FIDE initiative.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
