Armenia’s Government Declines Arf-D’s Legislative Initiative On Pass

ARMENIA’S GOVERNMENT DECLINES ARF-D’S LEGISLATIVE INITIATIVE ON PASSING TO 100% PROPORTIONAL ELECTION SYSTEM

2012-10-18 12:56:11

The Armenian government declined today the legislative initiative of
the Armenian Revolutionary Federation-Dashnaktustyun (ARF-D) faction
on passing to 100% proportional election system.

Deputy justice minister Grigor Muradyan stressed at the cabinet sitting
today that the single-seat system together with the proportional one
ensures the opportunity of presenting the interests of certain sector
of the population at the NA.

“It is obvious that the parliamentary majority may be formed only by
MPs elected via proportional list, as their number dominates in the
parliament. The existence of the single-seat system cannot influence
the electoral process, including the right of being elected,” he said.

According to Armenia’s Electoral Code, currently the number of
proportional seats in the NA is 75 and the single-seat 56.

Grigor Muradyan noted that the system gives an opportunity to those
who do not want to vote for a party or alliance, give their vote to
a non-party candidate.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
