The Prosperous Armenia party, which has once signed a coalition
agreement for backing the incumbent president in the 2013 polls, has
not so far declared any plans for acting otherwise, according to Arman
Melikyan, a former foreign minister of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic.

Speaking to reporters on Saturday, the politician said the party is
just trying to create an appearance that it is an opposition force.

`The [opposition] Armenian National Congress is a more influential
parliamentary force; to my mind, however, appearing in parliament was
the last victory for them. It is often said the opposition has to have
a common candidate, but even if that is the case, I don’t think there
will be anyone capable of garnering a majority of votes,’ he said.

Melikyan explained that President Serzh Sargsyan is in the best
positions as a future presidential contender.

As for his possible nomination, the politician said he doesn’t yet
know his plans as he is still analyzing the political arena. But he
promised to declare his intention in the coming month. `I may nominate
myself as an option against all others,’ he added.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
