The opposition Armenian Revolutionary Federation-Dashnakstutyun (ARF-D)
has condemned any attempts to rig the local self-government elections
slated later this months.

In a recent statement, the party’s Supreme Body calls upon the
Armenian authorities to take active measures to rule out election
irregularities, including pressures and attempts to intimidate
the voters.

“The role and significance of the local self-government elections
is invaluable. A strong and organized statehood implies necessarily
a maximum decentralization of government and an accomplished local
self-government system. Unfortunately, a decade and a half after
its inception, the local self-government in our reality is far from
meeting that standard. It is necessary for us to value the way we
have passed and draw the right conclusions. Whereas that institution
has chosen to eventually discredit itself,” reads the statement.

Considering the May 6 parliamentary election anti-democratic and
criticizing the environment of hostility and intolerance, the ARF-D
members say that the increasing tensions make the conduct of civilized
polls impossible. They note further that the local authorities’
attempts to manage state affairs often frustrate the state, splitting
the society.

Emphasizing that such processes directly impact the state, killing the
citizens’ faith in future, the the party asks the regime to rule out
such measures to ensure free, fair and competitive elections across
the country.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
