In Armenia female politicians are regarded as just a nice background
for their charismatic male leaders, former MP Lilit Galstyan told
journalists on Tuesday.

“In Armenia there is a culture of stud politicians – rich and strong
males – with women left no hope for high positions. Democracy and
high female representation in the parliament have nothing to do with
the Armenian reality,” Galstyan said.

Former MP Larisa Alaverdyan disagreed with Galstyan. She believes
that everything depends on a woman’s ambition and motivation.

“Some people in Armenia still believe that female politicians have no
family and are not normal, but the fact is that today only women are
able to improve the hard social-economic conditions we are living in,”
Alaverdyan said.

The Electoral Code of Armenia says that 20% of a party’s ticket should
be women. But the fact is that the new parliament has just 14 female
members – just 10.7% of all MPs.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
