Israel Should Recognize Armenian Holocaust Says Cabinet Minister

ISRAEL SHOULD RECOGNIZE ARMENIAN HOLOCAUST SAYS CABINET MINISTER

International Business Times

June 12 2012

An Israeli cabinet minister suggested on Tuesday (June 12) the Jewish
state should change its stance and recognize the 1915 mass killings
of Armenians by Ottoman Turks as an act of genocide.

Gilad Erdan, Israels environmental affairs minister, said he thinks it
is definitely fitting for the Israeli government to formally recognize
the holocaust of the Armenian people.

Israel had long avoided acknowledging the mass slayings of Armenians
as genocide, in deference to its strategic ties with Turkey, and to
avoid worsening strains over the killings of nine Turkish activists
in a commando raid on a Gaza-bound ship.

Erdan said the Israeli government had not formally changed its earlier
policy on the Armenian issue and he thought there was room for debate.

Armenia, backed by many historians and parliaments, says about 1.5
million Christian Armenians were killed in what is now eastern Turkey
during World War One in a deliberate policy of genocide ordered by
the Ottoman government.

The Armenian issue has stirred emotions in Israel where some
legislators feel the Jewish people who suffered six million dead
in the Nazi Holocaust, had a moral obligation to identify with the
tragedy that befell the Armenians.

Any parliamentary decision on the issue would not be binding on
the government.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
