The Armenian government report that President Serzh Sargsyan made an
official visit to Japan this week, and made a special stop in Sendai
to greet victims of last year’s earthquake and tsunami disasters.

Sargsyan went to the Yuriage Hiyoriyama memorial, which serves as a
memory to the victims of March 11th. The president was shown what
methods the city had used to recover and overcome the tragedy, as
well as taken to temporary shelters to see what the lives were like
of those who lost everything.

In speaking to the local residents, President Sargsyan passed on his
sympathy and support from those in Armenia. He said that when his
country found out about the devastation and suffering in Japan, the
people of Armenia kept careful track of what was going on, as well as
praying in support. A historic location, the Yerevan Saint Gregory
Illuminator Church, offered a holy mass, attended by thousands of
believers, to pray for those in the northern Tohoku region who had
perished or lost loved ones.

Sargsyan also gave thanks for the assistance Japan provided to Armenia
after a large earthquake in 1988, something the president’s nation has
never forgotten. He said that he truly believed the Japanese people
would overcome and recover from the difficult period, as they have a
long history of resilience, and while unfortunate that it took such
a terrible event, the nation of Japan will be stronger than ever. The
president then departed for Tokyo, where he will meet with government
officials on June 6th.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
