The L.A. County Democratic Party recently passed a resolution to ask
the California Democratic Party to endorse efforts to educate its
members about the Armenian Genocide and reject efforts to deny the
crime.

The resolution was authored by the Southern California Armenian
Democrats, which has many local members. It received widespread
support on its way to the county party’s executive committee.

The vote came on the eve of the 97th anniversary of the Armenian
genocide, in which 1.5 million Armenians were killed by Ottoman Turks.

The Turkish government has refused to acknowledge the deaths as genocide.

The state Democratic Party is on record for supporting remembrance of
the Armenian Genocide and has expressed its desire to make sure such a
crime never happens again.

However, at the California Democratic convention in February, several
Armenians and their supporters held a peaceful protest during an
appearance by talk show host Cenk Uygur at a meeting of the state
party’s progressive caucus. Uygur is host of the “Young Turks’ TV
program and made denialist comments about the genocide in the 1990s.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
