The sixth congress of Armenia’s Writers’ Union took place today at
the Ministry of Diaspora. More than 60 writers from about twenty
countries arrived to participate in the gathering.

The total number of participant writers reached 100. They are from
Armenia, Artsakh and Diaspora. In her address to the participants,
Hranush Hakobyan, Minister of Diaspora, said Armenia is a home for
each Armenian and naturally, it is a home of each Armenian writer.

Afterwards the minister presented the books published with the
assistance of the Ministry. She particularly singled out the
publication of the Armenian Constitution in Western Armenian.

‘The next book I will single out is about Baku. With this we want to
prove that this city was built by Armenians. We are going to translate
it into English, Russian and other languages,’ Hranush Hakobyan added.

Levon Ananyan, chairman of the Writers’ Union noted that the congress
is the start to the events on Armenian book festival.

‘We view Armenian and Diaspora writers as one unit. Unfortunately,
we do not have writers in Diaspora under 35, but we have writers
who continue thinking in Armenian and create new works dedicated to
the Motherland,’ Ananyan said, congratulating all the present on the
500th anniversary of Armenia’s typography.

Literary critic Avik Isahakyan, grandson of great Armenian poet Avetik
Isahakyan, said each intellectual in Diaspora is creating and writing.

‘We have a united army in Diaspora. Writing has become the demand
of those living in Diaspora. There is a concern that Armenian young
people are not creating in Armenian but it is natural. The important
thing is that they have remained Armenian,’ the literary critic said.

During the congress the presentation of books of Diaspora Armenian
writers will take place.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
