RUSSIAN DEPUTY FM DISCUSSED COOPERATION WITH U.S. ON KARABAKH SETTLEMENT IN WASHINGTON

Grigory Karasin on Thursday discussed with U.S. Deputy Secretary
of State William Burns, the issues related to the problems of South
Caucasus, Transnistria and Nagorno-Karabakh settlement, reports RIA
“Novosti” with reference to the Russian Foreign Ministry website.

“Sides discussed topical issues in Russian-American cooperation,
including on the South Caucasus and Transnistria and Nagorno-Karabakh
conflict” – said in a statement.

In addition, other international topics of common interest were
discussedat the meeting.

On the eve Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov at the final press
conference said that Russia intends to continue his mediation efforts
to resolve the Nagorno-Karabakh.

The closest three-way meeting between the presidents of Russia,
Armenia and Azerbaijan will be held January 23 in Sochi.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988
when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Armenian
armed forces have occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan since 1992,
including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and 7 surrounding districts.

Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994.

The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group – Russia, France, and the U.S. –
are currently holding the peace negotiations.

Armenia has not yet implemented the U.N. Security Council’s four
resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the
surrounding regions.
