Rostelecom is preparing to make its first foreign purchase. It plans
to buy 75% minus 1 share of the Armenian trunk operator GNC-Alpha. It
also plans to purchase internet provider Ucom to control at least 13%
of broadband access in Armenia, Kommersant reports.
The assets are expected to be purchased by a 100% subsidiary of
Cypriot operator Teleset networks LTD., buying 75% minus one share
of Filor Ventures Ltd., owner of 100% of GNC-Alpha, for $22.5 million.
The price for the operator may reach $30 million. The remaining 25%
plus one share of Filor or the company are planned to be purchased
by Teleset through a poll-auction later.
Traffic transit from the Gulf to Europe is considered a promising
business. Part of it runs through Armenia. GNC-Alpha is a good start
for further development of the company on broadband access in Armenia,
which was worth $40 million in 2011.
