Speaking at Moscow State University Oct. 24, Armenian President Serzh
Sargsyan stressed the importance of such meetings as a opportunity
of being in contact with young people that will play an immediate
role in the country’s life.

As regards Armenian-Russian relations, the Armenian leader said that
Armenia and Russia are on a joint battle duty, cooperating in meeting
challenges to regional security, as wel as within international
agencies.

“Our countries are dealing with similar problems of streamlining
our economies,” the Armenian leader said. The Armenian people made
its final choice in favor of deeper politico-economic integration,
seeking to settle disputes by means of cooperation rather than through
confrontation.

“We are ready to move on toward settling the Nagorno-Karabakh
conflict, which is of importance for the Armenian people and the
entire South Caucasus. More than twenty years ago, through a free
expression of will, the Nagorno-Karabakh people exercised its right
to bear responsibility for its own destiny and peaceful future. That
people had to pave its way to this future by defending its honor,
dignity and life. They defended their future by winning an unequal war
unleashed by Azerbaijan. Our firm conviction is that a new war will
not resolve the conflict. Confrontation is a way to destabilization,
provoking tension and arms race, exacerbating disagreements between
nations and provoking interethnic and religious strife, thereby
causing threat to other nations’ security,” President Sargsyan said.

The Armenian leader also noted that Armenia’s position has over
the two past years remained unchanged: Armenia is committed to the
soonest settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict on the basis of
principles of international law and elements indicated in the joint
statements the leaders of the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairing states
approved in L’Aquila, Muskoka and Deauville.

“It is through establishing cooperation that we see opportunities
of turning the South Caucasus into a region of cooperation and
prosperity,” President Serzh Sargsyan said.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
