Powerful tremors felt in Armenia as Van in Turkey hit by major quake

Residents in Yerevan and nearby towns rushed out of their multistoried
buildings on Sunday afternoon after sensing powerful tremors in what
later was reported as a major earthquake in neighboring Turkey.
(ArmeniaNow witnessed many people who feared to re-enter their homes
more than an hour after the tremors).
The Ministry of Emergency Situations reported that a magnitude 7.1
earthquake hit eastern Turkey at 3:41 p.m. Yerevan time, with the
epicenter located 38 kilometers to the north of the city of Van. The
tremors felt in the territory of the Republic of Armenia measured 3-5,
said the Ministry on its official website, adding that information was
being verified.
Meanwhile, international wire services and Turkish television have
been reporting about devastation and possible numerous deaths as a
result of the tremors and aftershocks in Van.
