SARKOZY TO PAY STATE VISIT TO ARMENIA ONLY, AND JUST MAKE TRIPS TO GEORGIA, AZERBAIJAN

French President Nicolas Sarkozy will visit the South Caucasus region
on October 6-7. The French President’s website reports that Sarkozy
will pay a state visit to Armenia only, and will just make trips to
Georgia and Azerbaijan.
Day.az reports that Ambassador of Azerbaijan to France Elchin Amirbekov
said that “the President of France pays his first official visit
to Azerbaijan in the history of diplomatic relations,” consciously
concealing the fact that this is not a state visit, to prevent public
resonance in Azerbaijan which feeds the myth that Azerbaijan is a
country of much importance for the West.
Moreover, according to Azadlyg, the Azerbaijani authorities are scared
that in Baku, Sarkozy will make a harsh statement on oppression of
democracy in the country.
“If Sarkozy makes harsh statements, he will face a massive
discreditation campaign,” Azadlyg reported.
