Commenting on French President Nicolas Sarkozy’s presence at famous
singer and song-writer Charles Aznavour’s recent concert in Paris,
the Turkish newspaper Hurriyet says the French leader has launched
an attack to re-establish his broken ties with local Armenians.

“President Nicolas Sarkozy’s move to suspend the Senate’s adoption of
the bill penalizing the denial of the Armenian Genocide had driven a
wedge between him and the Armenian community in France. But Sarkozy
has now launched an attack to re-establish his ties with the Armenian
Diaspora,” the paper says. “Sarkozy, together with Armenian President
Serzh Sargsyan attended Charles Aznavour’s concert dedicated to
the 20th anniversary of Armenia’s independence. Besides, he will be
visiting Yerevan between October 6 and 7.”

The Turkish publication hints that Sarkozy’s move might be an attempt
to gain Armenians support in the upcoming presidential race.

“The Armenian community which has around 500,000 voters in France,
has announced it will back the socialist candidate, Francois Holland,
in the presidential election,” it says.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
