Yerevan, the capital and largest city of Armenia, is celebrating its
2793rd anniversary today.

The history of Yerevan dates back to the 8th century BC, with the
founding of the fortress of Erebuni in 782 BC by king Argishti I,
in the southeast of the Armenian Highland. Yerevan was founded 29
years before the founding of Rome.

A plaque with a corresponding inscription is located at the Erebuni
Fortress Museum.

Yerevan is hosting a large number of outdoor events, including concerts
and thematic expositions.

The celebration coincided with the 20th anniversary of the independence
of Armenia.

The organizers promise a breathtaking display of fireworks by the
end of the celebrations.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
