Russia will have a role in the South Caucasus, but no country should
have the right to a privileged sphere of influence in the region,
Jennifer Walsh, the principle director for Russia, Ukraine and Eurasia
has said.

According to the Azerbaijani news agency Trend, Walsh made the
statement at the US Department of State on Thursday.

“We do not agree with this position of Russia,” she said, addressing a
conference dedicated to the 20 years of independence in South Caucasus.

Walsh said that that the US Defense Department respects the political
and defense choices made by each of the South Caucasus countries.

“We welcome the aspirations of Georgia to join Nato, this right is
mandated by the international law,” she said. “We respect the choice
of Azerbaijan to partner with NATO and also Armenia¹s membership in
NATO’s Partnership for Peace.”

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
