HERO OF NAGORNO-KARABAKH WAR: THERE IS AN IMPASSABLE BARRIER BETWEEN ARMY AND SOCIETY IN ARMENIA

Our army is our biggest achievement, and I refuse to hear repeated
reports about soldiers being killed and going mad, Manvel Yeghiazaryan,
hero of the Nagorno-Karabakh war, said during a press-conference
on Wednesday.

He said that without army there will be neither Armenia nor Nagorno-
Karabakh.

“Our army must consist of people who really want to serve. What we
need in our army is drastic reforms. We must learn to observe the law
and to be responsible for our actions. If those guilty are punished
in public, there will be no more such crimes,” Yeghiazaryan said.

He said that the Armenian army is stronger than the Azeri one. But the
problem is that Armenian men have no more fighting spirit. “Armenian
men have always been inborn soldiers, now, they are not. Perhaps,
this is a matter of education,” Yeghiazaryan said.

He noted that the Defense Minister does not have sufficient powers
to improve the situation. “The President must give him powers, but
if he fails to exercise them, he must be dismissed,” Yeghiazaryan said.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
