YEREVAN. – Turkish side gave quite ardent comments to the recent
statement of the President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan about Western
Armenia. The sharpest answer came from Turkish Prime-Minister Recep
Tayyip Erdogan, whose being in Azerbaijan at the time could be one of
the reasons for this sharpness, said a specialist in Turkic philology
from Armenia Artak Shakaryan to a press conference on Thursday.

According to Shakaryan, the words of the Armenian president have been
interpreted wrong in Turkey.

This is due to overreaction based on the dominating stereotypes of
Turkish society that the Armenians are cunning and far-sighted and
the ultimate goal of any undertaking is to return the territories of
Western Armenia.

Speaking about the sharp tone of statements by Erdogan, Shakaryan
suggested that the reason may not be only in the natural temper of
the PM but it is also possible that he did not see the entire text
of the statement and was given a part of it.

In general, the mess raised by Turkish and Azerbaijani sides played
into their hand, availing to declare once aging about those “bad”
Armenians. According to expert, an attempt to reduce the authority
of Armenia at this stage has succeeded to some degree. The evidence
for this is that Internet search engines query 90% of information on
this subject falls on the Azeri and Turkish point of view.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
