France’s ‘Sinatra’ Honored
Singer Charles Aznavour, the "Frank Sinatra of France," has been
granted Armenian citizenship, Agence France-Presse reports. Born
Shahnur Aznavourian in Paris to Armenian immigrants, Aznavour raised
money for victims of a 1988 earthquake in Armenia and starred in Atom
Egoyan’s 2002 film "Ararat," an epic meditation on the 1915 Armenian
genocide in Turkey.
In a decree granting citizenship to Aznavour, 84, Armenian President
Serzh Sarkisian called the tenor "a hero of the Armenian people."
