YEREVAN, Armenia: Armenia’s president on Monday lifted some of the
restrictions imposed after police cracked down on protests following
last month’s presidential election.

Robert Kocharian’s order allows political parties to resume activities
and stops the expulsion of nonresidents from the capital, Yerevan.

Other restrictions remain in place, including harsh controls on the
Armenian media.

The government declared a 20-day state of emergency on March 1, when
clashes between opposition supporters and police left eight people
dead and injured dozens.

On Saturday, the Constitutional Court rejected opposition candidate
Levon Ter-Petrosian’s appeal of the election results.
