Post-election tensions mounting in Armenia

Yerevan – Tensions in Armenia are mounting in the wake of Thursday’s
presidential elections. The poll was won by Prime Minister Serzh
Sarkasian, a close associate of outgoing President Robert Kocharian.
Opposition candidate Levon Ter-Petrosian claims he lost because of
electoral fraud and intimidation.
Some 20,000 people demonstrated today in the capital Yerevan in
support of Mr Ter-Petrosian. On Saturday, around 50,000 people turned
out. Several hundred opposition supporters are camping out in the
capital’s central square.
The authorities arrested a number of demonstrators and sacked three
foreign ministry employees for taking part in the protests.
