GOVERNMENT ENDORSES BILL ON RAISING PENALTY CEILING

YEREVAN, NOVEMBER 8, ARMENPRESS: The Armenian
government has endorsed today a bill on making a
change to the Armenian criminal law that calls for
raising the ceiling of maximum penalty size from 1,000
minimum wages to 3,000.
A deputy chief prosecutor Mnatsakan Sarkisian said
to reporters that the bill will be sent to
parliament’s consideration.
He argued that setting high penalties will become
an effective measure to crackdown on different
economic crimes, especially in combination with prison
terms for grave economic crimes.
He said the bill, if approved, would prompt
individual and corporate entities to observe properly
their tax obligations and would also eliminate what he
called ‘the atmosphere of impunity.’ These, he said,
would significantly increase budget revenue collection
rates.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
