NEW ARMENIAN ELECTION LAW MAY FOIL OPPOSITION’S UNITED CANDIDATE PLAN

Nov 2 2007
Armenian parliament will discuss today proposed changes to Armenia’s
Election Law, which include provisions aimed specifically against
the candidacy of the first Armenian president, Levon Ter-Petrosyan.
It is suggested that the provision be removed from the Election Law
on the nomination of presidential candidates by political blocs and
public initiatives and instead that a presidential candidate be put
forward by a single party or by the person’s own initiative. So,
once it is announced that Ter-Petrosyan is a united opposition
candidate, this fact will not be reflected in ballot papers. Thus,
the Armenian government has proved once again that their panic can
lead them to anything.
