During the first week of COP17 negotiations in Yerevan, Parties adopted 14 decisions under the Convention on Biological Diversity and its Cartagena and Nagoya Protocols.
The decisions address key issues, including biosafety, invasive alien species, gender equality, awareness-raising, compliance, and monitoring, according to a statement posted on COP17 Armenia’s official social media account.
CBD Executive Secretary Astrid Schomaker highlighted the extensive negotiations, constructive dialogue, and consensus-building efforts behind these outcomes.
The progress made during the first week marks an important step forward, while the ultimate measure of success will be the tangible difference these decisions make for nature and people.
“One week completed. Another important week of negotiations ahead,” the statement said.
The 17th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP17) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) is being held in conjunction with the 12th meeting of the Parties to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety (CP-MOP-12) and the sixth meeting of the Parties to the Nagoya Protocol on Access and Benefit-sharing (NP-MOP-6).
COP17 marks the first global review of collective progress toward implementing the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF). The events are taking place in Yerevan from October 19 to 30.
