The Prime Minister of Armenia defended the new agreement between “Telecom Armenia” and “Azertelecom” on the supply of transit Internet, stressing that such projects strengthen the country’s security and political weight in the region.

Major telecommunication operators of Armenia and Azerbaijan have signed a commercial agreement, which provides for mutual Internet transit through the territories of the two states. The deal raised a wave of criticism in opposition circles, to which the Prime Minister responded Nikol Pashinyan made clarifications during the government’s briefing. The head of the government denied the claims that the project contains dangers, noting that the logic of international economic processes is different.

“Usually, transit does not depend on the transit country, but on the final point of transit, and this is a simple logic,” Pashinyan stated.

According to the Prime Minister, the increase of international communication channels is directly proportional to the stability of the state. He emphasized that the more infrastructures cross the territory of the country, the higher its economic and security level. According to Pashinyan, critics want to see the state as a dead end for the conflict, while the government’s goal is to build the “Crossroads of Peace”.

“From south to north, from north to south, from east to west, from west to east, as much as possible, cables, pipes, roads, railways, air lines should pass. That is the guarantee of peace and security,” he added.

At the same time, industry experts dispel concerns about data leaks. According to experts, Azerbaijani Internet traffic, according to the currently available information, should simply pass through the territory of Armenia, without physically connecting and penetrating the Armenian internal network.

Emil Lazarian: “I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
