On April 8, representatives of the Human Rights Defender of the Republic of Armenia made an unannounced monitoring visit to Merdzavan Secondary School in Armavir Marz, RA.
The press release of the HRD office states that during the visit, the building, sanitary and hygienic conditions of the school were studied, as well as the relations between the pedagogical staff and students, the state of protection of their rights and interests.
Improvement of building conditions, ensuring the rights of students, including the full and unhindered realization of the right to education of people with special educational needs and disabilities, problems between the pedagogical staff, management and students and other issues were discussed with the school administration.
The representatives of the defender’s office got acquainted with the processes of organizing the educational process, had private conversations with the students, during which the problems related to the effective realization of the right to education were discussed.
The defender’s representatives recorded a number of problems, some of which are systemic and require an urgent solution.
In particular, the building attached to the school is in a bad condition, the bathrooms are old, there are problems related to ensuring sanitary and hygienic conditions. In general, the building conditions of the School are in poor condition and the physical environment is not accessible for persons with disabilities. There is a need to provide reasonable accommodations.
The school needs a multidisciplinary team, etc.
The defender’s representatives discussed the recorded problems with the school director. The latter presented the steps taken to solve the problems, as well as the vision of their further solution.
During the visit, the School’s management and pedagogical staff effectively cooperated with the representatives of the Defender’s staff.
The results of the unannounced monitoring visit, including the systemic problems repeatedly raised by the Defender, will be summarized, and the document and recommendations reflecting them will be submitted to the relevant authorities in the near future.
