LEBANON Armenian Catholicos Krikor Bedros XX has died

Asia News, Italy
by Fady Noun

The patriarch died yesterday at the age of 87 at the See of the Armenian Catholic Church in Beirut. His funeral will be held on Sunday, followed by burial inside the patriarchal convent in Bzommar. A man of prayer and culture, Patriarch Krikor Bedros showed great openness and remarkable steadfastness. His successor must be chosen within 40 days.

Beirut (AsiaNews) – The Armenian Catholic Church announced the death at the age of 87 of its leader, Catholicos-Patriarch Krikor Bedros (Gregory Peter) XX Gabroyan, who passed away yesterday at the See of the Armenian Catholic Patriarchate of Cilicia in Beirut, Lebanon.

The patriarch’s funeral will be held next Saturday at the Cathedral of Saint Elias and Saint Gregory the Illuminator, in downtown Beirut. The burial will follow at the patriarchal convent in Bzommar (Keserwan).

Krikor Bedros XX Gabroyan (1934-2021), officially the Catholicos-Patriarch of Cilicia of the Armenians, was elected on 24 July 2015 and enthroned in Bzommar on 9 August at the age of 81.

Born in Aleppo (Syria), he grew up in Lebanon where he first studied with the Marist Brothers before pursuing his studies at the Armenian monastery in Bzommar and later in Rome (first at the Armenian Leonine Pontifical College, then at the Gregoriana University). He was ordained priest on 28 March 1959.

Fr Krikor Bedros served for many years the Armenian Catholic community in Burj Hammud, Beirut's largest Armenian district, and was chosen in 1976 to serve the Armenian Catholic community in France.

Ordained bishop on 13 February 1977, he founded the Eparchy of Sainte-Croix-de-Paris, of which he was bishop from 1986 to 2013, when he retired.

Following the death of Catholicos-Patriarch Nerses Bedros XIX Tarmouni, as senior prelate, Bishop Krikor Bedros summoned the Synod of Bishops to meet in Bzommar to pick a successor. To his surprise and despite his advanced age, he was elected as the new patriarch of the Armenian Catholic Church.

A man of prayer, with a broad culture and an extraordinary memory, Patriarch Krikor Bedros was also a man of great openness and remarkable steadfastness.

Under Church rules, the Synod of the Armenian Church, chaired by its eldest member, in this case Bishop Pierre Mariati of Aleppo, must now pick a successor within 40 days.

Although the senior prelate is tasked with choosing the date and location of the election, the latter is usually held at the Armenian Catholic patriarchal convent in Bzommar.

The Armenian Catholic Church, an integral part of the Catholic Church, is an Eastern Catholic Church.

The primate of the Church bears the title of "Catholicos-Patriarch of Cilicia of the Armenians," with residence in Beirut, Lebanon.

The Armenian Catholic Church follows the Armenian rite with its own liturgy.

BEIRUT — Armenian Catholic Patriarch Gregoire Pierre XX Gabroyan died in Beirut May 25.

The 86-year-old had served as patriarch since 2015.

Gabroyan “was a great leader, a servant-hearted leader, wise and realistic,” said Serop Ohanian, Lebanon field director for the Howard Karagheusian Commemorative Corp., which has served socially and economically vulnerable Armenian communities for 100 years.

“He was always close to the people, visiting the sick and the destitute, providing the necessary and needed support to them,” Ohanian told Catholic News Service. “It is a great loss to our community.”

The Middle East Council of Churches said Patriarch Gabroyan was “a most prominent supporter of the ecumenical movement and the MECC.”

A funeral Mass will be May 29 at the Cathedral of St. Elias and St. Gregory the Illuminator in Beirut.

Gabroyan was born in Aleppo, Syria, Nov. 15, 1934, to parents who had fled Marin, Turkey, as a result of the 1915 genocide. In 1938, his family settled in Lebanon.

He received his early education in Lebanon, including at the Bzommar Monastery School. He continued his higher studies at the Pontifical Armenian College in Rome and graduate studies in philosophy and theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University.

He was ordained a priest in Lebanon March 28, 1959.

Gabroyan served as principal of the Armenian Catholic Mesrobian School in Bourj Hammoud, Beirut’s main Armenian district, from 1960 to 1969. He was rector of the minor seminary of Bzommar from 1969 to 1976.

In 1976, he was appointed to serve Armenian Catholics in France and was ordained a bishop Feb. 13, 1977.

He retired Feb. 2, 2013, but that retirement was interrupted two years later when, at age 80, he was elected as the 20th patriarch after the death Patriarch Nerses Bedros XIX Tarmouni.

Armenian ombudsman: Azerbaijani servicemen’s acts pose serious threat to civilian population of Gegharkunik and Syunik Provinces

Panorama, Armenia

The government of Armenia is obliged to take active steps to guarantee the rights of the Armenian citizens and the entire population of Armenia, while the international community should abandon its passive stance and immediately take decisive measures to prevent the blatantly illegal and criminal acts, the continuous human rights violations and the real threats of further violations by the Azerbaijani armed forces, Armenia’s Human Rights Defender (Ombudsman) Arman Tatoyan said in a statement on Wednesday.

In particular, the evidence gathered by the human rights defender of Armenia also confirms that on 25 May the Azerbaijani troops illegally staying in the village of Verin Shorzha in the Vardenis community of Gegharkunik Province, which is a part of the sovereign territory of Armenia, presented to the Armenian servicemen blatantly illegal demands to abandon the area where they were present, provoked a scuffle and intentionally shot and killed an Armenian soldier.

According to the gathered evidence, in the days preceding the latest incident, the Azerbaijani military regularly tried to provoke clashes and brawl, while illegally being in the sovereign territory of Armenia. These incidents occurred both in Gegharkunik and Syunik Provinces.

The ombudsman specifically underlines that these incidents also pose a threat to the civilian population of Armenia. These are the areas which serve as pastures and hayfields for the civilian population. They graze their large and small cattle in these areas and live there during spring, summer and autumn.

According to the conviction of the human rights defender, the described concrete acts of the Azerbaijani servicemen pose a serious threat, in fact, to the civilian population of Gegharkunik and Syunik Provinces (for example, their attempts of illegal advance towards the villages of Khoznavar, Verishen, Akner, Kut, Ayrk, Verin Shorzha, etc.).

“These actions should be viewed within the context of their illegal incursion into the sovereign territory of Armenia on May 12 and 13, 2021, the threatening of the shepherds of the villages of Gegharkunik and Syunik with murder and captivity, their provocation near the border areas and creation of tensions within the civilian population of Armenia,” Tatoyan said.

“These acts of the Azerbaijani armed forces should also be viewed within the context of the policies of Armenophobia and enmity pursued by the authorities of Azerbaijan. Moreover, the regular criminal acts of the Azerbaijani troops against the border residents of Armenia should also be taken into consideration (the throwing of stones at an Armenian civilian car on the Goris-Kapan road, the dragging of the shepherd of Aravus, and punching him in the eye, the blocking of the road from Grois to Chakaten with an Azerbaijani car, and grossly violating the right of free movement of the residents of the villages, the threating of the border residents of Armenia, including the shepherds, the refusal to return the cattle that crosses into areas under Azerbaijani control, and other incidents).

“Therefore, it is evident that these reveal the real threat of the Azerbaijani armed forces directed at the Armenian citizens and the entire population of Armenia, which also undermine peace and security in the region.

“The human rights defender will continue sending reports based on evidence about the real situation on the ground to the international organizations,” he said.
