Armenia should stop playing with fire: Turkey

Dilara Hamit   | 21.09.2020

ANKARA

Turkey's National Defense Ministry on Monday warned Armenia against playing with fire after an Azerbaijani soldier was martyred in a cross-border attack.

"Armenia, which unlawfully occupied Upper Karabakh, now violated the cease-fire in Tovuz region and killed a heroic Azerbaijani soldier," the ministry said on Twitter.

It also wished Allah's mercy upon the martyred soldier and conveyed condolences to the brotherly country of Azerbaijan.

Turkey's Foreign Ministry in a tweet also shared support for Azerbaijan.

Since 1991, the Armenian military has illegally occupied the Upper Karabakh, or Nagorno-Karabakh region, an internationally recognized territory of Azerbaijan.

Four UN Security Council and two UN General Assembly resolutions as well as decisions by many international organizations refer to this fact and demand the withdrawal of the occupational Armenian forces from Upper Karabakh and seven other occupied regions of Azerbaijan.

The OSCE Minsk Group — co-chaired by France, Russia and the US — was formed to find a peaceful solution to the conflict, but has yet to get any results.

Armenia is confident in its capacities to protect the right of the people of Artsakh for self-determination – MFA

Spokeswoman of Armenia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs Anna Naghdalyan commented on Ilham Aliyev's latest remarks made during the founding ceremony of the offshore operations of the “Absheron” field.

"The statements made by the President of Azerbaijan are deeply disappointing. They demonstrate the inability of the leader of the neighboring country to perceive soberly and without painful emotions the existing reality and his own role in the creation of that reality," said Naghdalyan, according to the press service of the foreign ministry.

In her words, such rhetoric, containing obviously groundless and even false allegations, does not dignify any head of state.

"We realize the damages inflicted by Azerbaijan on the peace process by the April 2016 aggression and the military escalation initiated in July 2020. In order to prevent these damages from becoming irreversible, the government of Azerbaijan should reconsider its policy of the use of force and threat of force, renounce its attempts to destabilize the regional peace and security by involving non-regional players, and prepare itself for a peaceful settlement," said Naghdalyan, adding: "Armenia is confident in its capacities to protect the right of the people of Artsakh for self-determination and the right to live in their historical homeland, and we once again underline with full confidence that there is no alternative to the peaceful resolution of the conflict."

Armenian defense minister: Azerbaijani president should blame himself

Armenian Defense Minister Davit Tonoyan has reacted to the latest statement of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev that negotiations over Nagorno-Karabakh are “virtually non-existent.”

“If he does not negotiate, then the negotiations do not exist for him,” the defense chief told reporters at Yerablur Military Pantheon in Yerevan on Monday, September 21, marking the 29th anniversary of Armenia’s independence.

Aliyev had also accused the Armenian authorities of disrupting the process of negotiations.

“He should blame himself instead of blaming the Armenian side,” Tonoyan stressed.

Congratulating Armenians on Independence Day, the minister wished the Armenian people strength and endurance to overcome all challenges.

Aliyev’s statements “deeply disappointing” – Armenian MFA

Public Radio of Armenia
Sept 20 2020

The Armenian Foreign Ministry says Azerbaijani President’s statements during the founding ceremony of the offshore operations of the “Absheron” field are deeply disappointing.

“They demonstrate the inability of the leader of the neighboring country to perceive soberly and without painful emotions the existing reality and his own role in the creation of that reality,” Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Anna Naghdalyan said in a statement.

The comments come after Aliyev “warned” Armenia to drop “its ugly plans” and threatened “serious consequences.”

Aliyev accused Armenia of “preparing for a new war” and concentrating forces near the line of contact.

“Such rhetoric, containing obviously groundless and even false allegations, does not dignify any head of state,” Naghdalyan said.

“We realize the damages inflicted by Azerbaijan on the peace process by the April 2016 aggression and the military escalation initiated in July 2020. In order to prevent these damages from becoming irreversible, the government of Azerbaijan should reconsider its policy of the use of force and threat of force, renounce its attempts to destabilize the regional peace and security by involving non-regional players, and prepare itself for a peaceful settlement,” the Spokesperson added.

She stressed that Armenia is confident in its capacities to protect the right of the people of Artsakh for self-determination and the right to live in their historical homeland, and reiterated that there is no alternative to the peaceful resolution of the conflict.
