YEREVAN, AUGUST 9, ARMENPRESS. A former military official has been arrested in suspicion of bribery, the National Security Service (NSS) said in a news release.

The NSS said the suspect, a former high-ranking officer of a military commissariat, together with an accomplice have organized the procedure of exempting or deferring 13 men from mandatory military service by faking medical documents during the 2019 summer conscription period. The ex-official and the accomplice, the identity of whom are undisclosed, have charged the would-be conscripts various amounts of money ranging from 2000 dollars up o 15,000 dollars for their services.

The investigation has revealed that one of the suspects was also engaged in organizing the discharge of two active-duty conscripts by providing them with fake medical papers. A doctor at a military hospital was involved in the scheme.

Three people are charged in the case, and the former high-ranking officers and the accomplice have been placed under pre-trial detention.

As the investigation continues, the NSS called upon citizens to “refrain from illegal actions for avoiding military service”.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
