Members of the radical opposition party Founding Parliament say a
protest march will be held tomorrow, April 24, despite the fact that
the party’s leaders are still in police detention for organizing
the event.

The party spread a statement several months ago where they urge the
people to hold an anti-government protest in Yerevan on April 24,
when the Centennial of the Armenian Genocide is commemorated.

On April 7 law enforcement bodies arrested the Founding Parliament
(FP) party leader Zhirayr Sefilyan, FP President Garegin Chugaszyan,
FP deputy president Varuzhan Avetisyan, Pavel Manukyan and Gevorg
Safaryan on charges of planning to organize mass unrest.

Shushi special division Commander Zhirayr Sefilyan’s wife told media
that with the help of lawyers she was able to talk to her husband.

“Do not doubt, we will manage it, and join our movement because the
more we become the faster the change of government will take place,”
Nanor Sefilyan told Gala press.

Last week Gevorg Safaryan, FP secretariat member, known for his
participation in different protests, who is under arrest for two months
in Nubarashen penitentiary, declared a hunger strike explaining that
he is being politically persecuted.

He was visited by a human rights observing group which recorded that
Safaryan was moved to a separate cell for those holding hunger strikes.

Many in Armenia are against the protest “100th anniversary without the
regime”, because they think that on that day no political activities
should be held, however they said that on April 24, after paying
tribute to the victims of the Genocide, at six in the afternoon in
Erebuni museum square the planned protest will take place.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
