POPE PROVES HUMAN RIGHTS, JUSTICE SUPERIOR TO POLITICAL, ECONOMIC INTERESTS – CLERGYMAN

15:07 * 14.04.15

Bishop Hovakim Manukyan, Head of the Interchurch Relations Department,
Mother See of Echmiadzin, commented on the liturgy at St. Peter’s
Basilica dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide.

According to him, it was a daring step by Pope Francis, who thus
proved that human rights and justice are superior to political and
economic interests.

“In his message the Pope spoke out of the Armenian Genocide. However,
his statement was unprecedented in that he called on the international
community to recognize the Armenian Genocide without any reservations,”
Bishop Manukyan said.

As regards countermeasures by Turkey, he said that Turkey originally
objected to a liturgy.

“Aware of the Vatican’s influence, it launched a struggle. At every
meeting they tried to press the Vatican. The Turkish ambassador to
Vatican boasted recently that he had succeeded in prevented the Pope’s
visit to Armenia and his using the word ‘genocide’. In defiance of
that, the Pope called on the entire world to recognize the Armenian
Genocide.”

Bishop Manukyan reported that the Pope is expected to visit Armenia
in 2016.

“Thirty-eight delegations led by the leaders of seven churches will
be in Armenia on April 24.”

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
