BAKU. Feb 4

Baku is calling on the international charitable project Music For
Peace to drop the idea of holding a concert in the capital of the
unrecognized Nagorno-Karabakh republic on February 6.

“There is a discrepancy between the name of the organization Music
For Peace and the mission that it pursues,” Azeri Foreign Ministry
spokesman Hikmet Hajiyev said on Wednesday.

The organization of a concert on “the occupied Azeri territories” does
not serve any purpose for the restoration of peace but encourages an
aggressive policy, which has violated the rights of over one million
Azeris, he said.

“Understanding its responsibility, the organization named Music For
Peace should cancel such a provocative step. Otherwise, the individuals
paying an illegal visit to the occupied territories will be put on
the list of persona non grata in Azerbaijan,” Hajiyev said.

At the same time, Azerbaijan will demand explanations from UNESCO as
to the grounds on which Music For Peace has placed this international
organization’s logo on its website, he said.

The Music For Peace project describes itself as a nonprofit association
of musicians, philanthropists, and organizers of classical music
concerts.

It declares its primary mission as the organization of charitable
concerts and master classes in post-conflict areas and regions
affected by natural disasters and terrorism around the world and also
the popularization of classical music, especially among young people
and teenagers living in difficult conditions.

The project participants claim to be not related with politics
and often try to arrange their tours in a way so as to perform on
territories belonging to the opposing sides in a conflict, i.e. Serbia
and Kosovo, Georgia and South Ossetia, etc.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
