Eurasian integration to boost Armenia’s job market – economist

An Armenian economist said Saturday that he expects the country’s
membership in the Eurasian Economic Union to essentially increase the
export volumes and boost the job market.

“We are de facto integrated into the Eurasian Economic Union,” Ashot
Tavadyan, Professor and Doctor in Economics, told reporters at a news
conference, pointing out to the 30% decrease in the natural gas prices
and the $200 million worth loan provided to the country for the
reconstruction of the Nuclear Power Plant.

Asked to comment on the possible losses that the country might suffer
in case of deciding against Eurasian integration, Tavadyan said he
thinks that it would essentially reduce the money transfers from
Russia and lead to a surge in the gas prices. “We would lose 3 billion
Dollars within five years,” he noted.

As for the Russian sanctions, the economist said he thinks that their
influence would be tangible for Armenia regardless of the decision to
join the economic bloc. “By signing the [EU] Association Agreement,
Georgia will have no economic advantages over Armenia,” the economist
added.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
