NO EU ASSOCIATION AGREEMENT CAN BE SIGNED BY ARMENIA WITHOUT ECONOMIC COMPONENT
YEREVAN, October 11. /ARKA/. Armenia cannot sign an agreement of
association with the European Union with no economic component,
deputy of the European parliament Yatsek Sariush-Volsky said Thursday
at a conference on Eastern Partnership, ARKA reports referring to
RIA Novosti.
Sariush-Volsky expressed regrets Armenia decided to join the Customs
Union, but said it is the country’s choice. If Armenia wants to turn
to European standards, they will have to do it independently, he said.
After negotiations of Armenian and Russian presidents Serzh Sargsyan
and Vladimir Putin a joint statement was made on September 3 saying
Armenia intends to join the Russia-led Customs Union and participate
in establishing the Eurasian economic union. Before, Yerevan was
expected to sign an association and free trade agreement with the EU
at Eastern Partnership summit in Vilnius. European officials say the
two formats are incompatible.-0–
