ARMENIAN ACTIVISTS PLEDGE NEW EFFORTS TO PROTECT COVERED MARKET (VIDEO)

The Pre-parliament activists are planning daily protests beginning
next week in support of the restoration of Yerevan’s Covered Market.

Garegin Chugaszyan, a member of the group, promised Thursday in
Yerevan’s Mashtots Park their activists’ coordinated efforts towards
internationalizing the issue.

“At the UNESCO-initiated conference, we introduced the problem to the
participants. They promised to raise the question in their countries.

We are going to launch a petition in Yerevan to apply to UNESCO and
corresponding bodies. We are thus internationalizing the issue,”
he said.

Vardan Hakobyan, another activist of the group, complained that
neither the Police nor the Prosecutor General’s Office see anything
criminal about the ongoing redevelopment activities in the area,
despite earlier fines imposed by the Yerevan City Hall.

“We are going to apply to the minister of territorial administration
with an open letter,” he said.

The group promised to step up its pressures to restore the market’s
former image.

“That will happen sooner or later; that market will not become a
supermarket,” Hakobyan said.
