YEREVAN. July 16

A protest rally is being held in front of the Russian embassy in
Yerevan on Tuesday.

Several dozen people, among them rights campaigners, have gathered
to protest against the humiliating treatment of the Armenian driver
responsible for the deadly traffic accident south of Moscow in which
18 people were killed.

The youth wing of the Armenian revolutionary federation Dashnaktsutyun
plans to organize another protest rally and to hand a women’s dressing
gown to the Russian ambassador.

Armenian rights campaigner Karen Andreasian earlier sent a letter to
Russian human rights commissioner Vladimir Lukin, asking him to deal
with the matter.

“Armenian citizen Hrachya Haruityunyan, accused of violating traffic
rules that led to multiple deaths, was brought to court wearing a
women’s dressing gown, which was a humiliating sight to look upon.

Please, deal with this incident and act within your powers to aid the
Armenian citizen. Please, inform me of the results,” the letter says.

The Armenian Foreign Ministry told the media that the Armenian embassy
in Moscow remains in touch with Harutyunyan’s lawyers “in order to
provide any assistance he may need.”

“Two defense attorneys and an interpreter have been assigned to him,”
the Foreign Ministry said.

Harutyunyan’s appearance in court wearing a women’s dressing gown
was criticized by Armenian politicians and public figures.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
