Georgia’s Civil Court has rejected a slander suit filed by Vahagn
Chakhalyan against Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili.

Chakhalyan had named Saakashvili and Georgian Prime Minister Vano
Merabshvili in the suit, accusing them of making unsubstantiated
charges against him for which he was never prosecuted.

The Armenian activist from Javakhk had sought a public retraction of
the charges, an apology, plus 22 million Georgian Lari ($13.2 million)
in moral compensation.

Chakhalyan had told Hetq that the amount was equal to the monthly
expenses of Saakashvili.

The court sustained its rejection of the suit by arguing that the
law does not envisage a public apology and that Chakhalyan’s legal
basis for the suit was lacking and imprecise.

In his suit, Chakhalyan noted that after being released from prison he
has remained unemployed and in dire social straits. He had requested
that a delay be granted in the paying of a state fine until the
completion of the court hearing of his suit.

Judge Anzhela Khourodze stated that Chakhalyan had twelve days to
lodge an appeal.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
